I know what you are thinking – “Therese, we are still in the midst of a pandemic, so why wear lipstick?”

Lipstick lifts your mood friends. There is actually something called the “Lipstick effect” When the economy goes south, sales of lipstick still go up. When I put on a bold lip I feel better, whether at the grocery store with a mask, sitting on my couch or on a Zoom call.

For those of us that are so over lipstick stains on the inside of our mask, I stumbled across a gold mine the other day. You can get a face bracket to go under your mask. Not only does it keep your lipstick intact, but it stops you from sucking in your mask when you are in heavy breathing-mode on the treadmill. Better believe one of these is on its way to my house.

So why is clean so important. We know there are harmful ingredients in our cosmetic and beauty products, right? Ingredients in our beauty products we should avoid? What Ingredients Should You Look for in Your Lip Products

There are two main ingredients you want to be aware of when it comes to your lip products.

Lead in Your Lipstick

Lead is one of biggest offenders that you can still find in lipsticks and lip glosses. To compound things, lead is not required to be listed on the ingredients list and it’s been found in high concentrations in some leading brands.

Lead can be toxic, it has negative effects on both the brain and nervous system. In addition it can cause issues with fertility and cause learning delays if you are exposed when pregnant. 

There are also other heavy metals such as, aluminum, chromium, and cadmium found in lipsticks as well.

All lipstick options below are without lead and other heavy metals.

Parabens in Your Lipstick

Parabens is another major offender and has been tied especially to hormonal disruptions, due to their ability to mimic estrogen. 

Parabens are pervasive and in so much more than just your lipstick. 

Ingredients to watch out for: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben (used mostly commonly), butylparaben and isobutylparaben.

There are other questionable ingredients, but these two are the biggest I look out for in my lipsticks. 

All lipstick options below are paraben-free. 

Many of these I use, and the others I looked through the entire ingredient list to make sure there was nothing harmful on the label.

The good news! There are actually some good options out there.

Lipstick That Stays On All Day 

Even with long lasting shades, lip prep is important. 

A few important tips before applying your lasting color. Exfoliate your lips, at least once a week. In the winter time I need to exfoliate mine twice a week. 

Apply lip balm to moisturize your lips, but do not do it right before you apply your lip color as it will be more likely to slide off. I exfoliate and put on my Peppermint Lip Conditioner at night.

I can tell you my two favorites!

The LimeLife’s Enduring Lip Color is one of them. Before LimeLife I never used liquid to matte lip color before. I rarely use anything else now. Once this dries there is hardly no transfer and the colors stay on for about 6 hours. The colors are vibrant and you only need one coat, but this is buildable if you want a deeper color. It’s also THE first matte lipstick I’ve used that doesn’t dry out my lips.

Another go-to lipstick for me over the years has been BeautyCounter’s Color Intense Lipstick. It has lasting power and the colors are rich with a really effective moisturizing effect.
