You wake up one morning and look in the mirror and you notice dark circles and puffy eyes? You think where did these come from and how do I get rid of them? What are the reasons for puffy eyes and dark circles and how can you reduce the appearance of them.

Reasons for dark circles and puffy eyes

  • Retention of water can cause swelling, which can translate to puffy eyes. So while the occasional crabs or corn-beef brisket are yummy and totally warranted, in general go easy on the salt.
  • Dehydration. Drink eight 8oz glasses of water every day. I have a 30oz bottle and aim to drink 3 of these a day. Having a big bottle is so important because I will forget to get up 8 plus times to get more water.
  • The inevitable, you are aging. I’m 39 and it’s starting to happen. The dark circles, the crow’s feet, the puffy eyes and loose skin. Ugh, ? I can’t escape it. The tissue around your eyes weaken and you lose firmness.
  • Lack of sleep. Not getting enough shut-eye or too much shut-eye can cause both dark circles and puffy eyes.

What can you do to reduce puffy eyes?

In addition to the inverse of what is listed above, there are skincare routines that can help with puffiness and dark circles. One part of your skincare routine should be a good eye cream. Safe ingredients to look for in eye creams that reduce inflammation and help to tighten skin include chamomile, cucumber, arnica, caffeine, jambu extract, wild algae, squalane, and hyaluronic acid.

A go-to home ready for puffy eyes has been hemorrhoid cream, due to its ability to constrict blood vessels. However, this drug store money saver seems not worth the risk.

A lot of anti-aging creams will have retinol in them. Retinols have proved effective in fighting fine lines, puffy eyes among other aging woes. Unfortunately, the safety of retinol is questionable. EWG’s Skin Deep shows that there are concerns around reproductive toxicity. There is also thought that retinoic acid and retinyl palmitate, in combination with sunlight, may increase skin cancer risk

As part of my journey towards more natural skincare and makeup products, I use the following, which are safe and have proved effective. I use the BeautyCounter Eye Rescue Cream from the CounterMatch collection in the morning – makeup goes on easy, as it’s really light. It’s good for puffiness and the caffeine helps to tighten the skin around the eyes for the day. Then in the evening, I use the BeautyCounter Rejuvenating Cream that works more on the smoothing of your fine lines and helps with the tightening as well.

I then go over my face with an ice roller, which reduces any leftover puffiness or redness. I just put it in a ziplock baggy and in the freezer for a few hours before use. I’ve also noticed it’s helped make my jawline look sharper. This one looks like the one I have, but I’m not 100%.

I’ve added these eye creams into my skin regimen back in May and the ice roller just a few days ago and I’ve already seen some great results. What do you think? Can you. see it too?

I’m an independent beauty consultant with BeautyCounter and if you sign-up as a new customer you will get 20% off of your Rejuvenating Eye Cream. The Rejuvenating Eye Cream is being phased out, so if you want to try it I’d stock up now. The comparable product is the Countertime Ultral Renewal Cream, which I’ve since started to use and am even seeing better results. The Countertime. eye cream also has a natural source of retinol, which is a plant-derived Retinatural Complex, and Persian silk tree extract. This is the ingredient responsible for the smoothing of your fine lines. I’ve heard the Countertime works even quicker.

If you are looking to try safe beauty and skincare products, take the skincare quiz and I will put together and send you a customized skin care sample package.
